Environmental Rehabilitation Projects

The Chelopech mine has been in operation for over 50 years. Until 2004, the old mining method of sublevel caving resulted in an abundance of waste rock material, erosion of the nearby mountain ridges and large-scale surface caving. In 2004, with the implementation of the best available techniques in the mining industry (European Union document for Best Available Techniques for the Management of Tailings and Waste-Rock in Mining Activities), the Company commenced a large scale two phase rehabilitation program of disturbed areas. The first phase involved the demolition of old industrial buildings, resizing of slopes, and covering the area with clay and soil layers followed by successful grass seeding and tree planting. Phase two involved the rehabilitation of waste rock stockpiles and was completed in September 2009. Ongoing maintenance of these projects will enable the revival of a natural habitat for wildlife indigenous to the area.
