Dedicated to health & safety in Bulgaria

With over 1,200 employees in Bulgaria, Dundee Precious Metals is fully committed to ensuring the health and safety of each and every one. Safety is not simply defined in policies and procedures, it is our top priority everyday. We are focused on comprehensive personnel training, continuous improvement of working conditions, and occupational health and safety. All of our sites have a dedicated Health and Safety team to develop and maintain best practices and results.

Best practices

Our Bulgarian team has implemented what employees refer to as Golden Rules – a set of rules that ensure a safer and more secure work environment. These rules, which are reviewed regularly, apply to all employees, contractors, and visitors to our sites and represent our commitment to safety as one of our core values.

In early 2020, we achieved 2,000,000 man-hours with zero lost time injury (LTI), and our team at Chelopech received the “Safety and Zero Harm” award from the Bulgarian Chamber of Mining and Geology - the highest recognition for occupational health and safety in the Bulgarian mining industry.

Occupational health and safety

We have implemented several standards focused on improving occupational health and safety in all DPM sites. Some examples are the Arsenic Materials Management Standard and the Incident Classification, Investigation and Reporting Standard. These standards have streamlined incident reporting and investigations, and have ultimately improved safety procedures for our employees.

In order to ensure operational viability and employees’ health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, DPM strictly observes all requirements enforced by Bulgaria’s Ministry of Health.

Community Engagement

Our focus on safety extends to the local community. A range of events organized with schools, local administration and the general public raise awareness and critical skills, including the use of fire extinguishers, reacting in emergency situations, and raising awareness of resources that could be shared in case of emergency.

Open Doors Day, held annually, provides unique opportunities for people to visit the underground mine. While on site, visitors participate in safety training and a simulated rescue of an injured person.
